About Loden

Loden fabric, as we know it today, has been used for centuries by our ancestors as a reliable (outdoor) fabric to protect themselves from all weather conditions. The fabric for our products has been produced in unbroken succession by the same family since 1644.

But what exactly is Loden?

To make loden, wool is first spun into a yarn, which is then woven into a fabric. The special properties that make up loden are given to it in the final step of fulling. The fabric is felted by applying heat and mechanical stress, so that it is compressed until a strong, weatherproof fabric is created.

What are the advantages of Loden?

The wool in the loden,

  • is odor-inhibiting. This means that you don't need to wash your clothes as often or even at all, despite strenuous tours. Simply airing them is usually enough.
  • is temperature-balancing. Because the wool is a hollow fiber, it adapts to the external conditions.
  • can absorb up to 35 percent of its own weight in moisture, making it feel dry for longer and keeping you warm even when wet.

Through the weaving and fulling process,

  • A strong fabric is created that is surprisingly robust compared to other wool products.
  • This creates a fairly dense, water- and wind-repellent surface that will protect you from the worst of the weather.
